The Goodfellows - What Do They Do? For over 70 years, the  Goodfellows program has worked to make sure that the needy children of the area have a good Christmas. We furnish each child with new clothes, along with toys, games and candy. The Goodfellows Committee is made up of Legion, SAL and Auxiliary members. We shop for clothes and specialty items, then pack all items in a family box, wrap and distribute to the families.

Goodfellows partners with local firefighters, who collect toys and monetary donations through the Crusade For Toys program. Collection begins in November and continues for several weeks. Collection boxes will be located at local fire stations, or donors may drop off toys/donations at the American Legion Post 28.

In 2018, the Goodfellows program served 136 families and 363 children in the northwest Ottawa County area, and provided toys for the stores of the Salvation Army, Love In Action and the Coopersville Care Center. We are anticipating a great need again this year for toys and clothing. The Goodfellows program receives referrals from the Salvation Army, which provides screening to determine eligible families for our program.

TIMELINE: For Christmas 2019, shoppers will need to pick up their shopping lists between 6:00 and 8:00 pm on December 5th at the Post. Written guidelines for shopping are available at this time. Shopping must be completed by December 16th. Bring all items, separated by family, to the upstairs ballroom at the Post. Add a pair of mittens, a hat, and scarf (if available) for each child, plus a blanket for each baby. The wrapping party is on Thursday, December 19th at 7:00 pm. Distribution to the families begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 21st.

Thank you, everyone – The Goodfellows Committee
